Title: The Flight of Ducks

Features: The Flight of Ducks was Australia's first on-line doctoral thesis. It is a multi-purpose web-based work built around a collection of archival materials from a camel expedition into the central Australian frontier in 1933. This journey was revisited in 1976 and retraced in 1996. As a digital work, it takes the form of a journey through a datascape, telling an important and on-going story of intercultural contact. It demonstrates how different forms of access can be used to create a responsive documentary where it is possible to talk back. Like the stories of journeys in oral epic poetry, it has evolved into a proliferating organism, shaped by its participants, by a continuous refinement of the poetics of the medium and by a concern to facilitate long-term access to its content. The hypertexts that form this research report are hyper-linked to each other and to the material they describe. They are also embedded in the context of an on-going electronic conversation. Each hypertext examines a question about access: What forms of encoding architecture are likely to assist long term access to digital material? What narrative structures will assist accessibility? How can restricted access be used to accommodate the cultural sensitivities inherent in the public presentation of material relating to Australian Aborigines? for more information see: http://www.acmi.net.au/FOD/FOD0837.html

Title: Perceptions of Active Graduate Faculty at a Research Extensive University Regarding Electronic Submission of Theses and Dissertations(ETDs)

Features: (Video, hyperlinks, animation, three-dimensional modeling, etc) This study investigates and explores faculty perceptions in all disciplines toward Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) during the implementation of ETDs at Louisiana State University. LSU is one of only 25 universities nationwide holding both land-grant and sea-grant status and is classified by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as Doctoral/Research Universities-Extensive. Chapter 1 provides the rationale for this study, the importance of higher education, the importance and role of the faculty advisor in graduate education as influencing the effectiveness of research as collaborator by offering his or her interest, motivation, ability, and preparation in assisting the graduate masters or doctoral student. Chapter 2 examines the current literature concerning the emergence of ETDs, the move to ETDs, and the reasons for a needs assessment from faculty, and anatomy of a ETD as they apply to the changing realities and diffusion of innovation in higher education. Chapter 3 presents the methodology and description of the population sample, instrumentation, and data analysis applied in/to the study. Chapter 4 investigates the findings of the study by analyzing by SPSS each answer to survey questions, as was statistically appropriate and further studying if any significant relationships existed between two select variables. Chapter 5 provides the summary, conclusions, and future ecommendations. The appendices contain select answers to the survey questions by diverse faculty. As one responded said, “This is the 21st century, hop on board.” This dissertation is organized in chapters for .pdf and appendixes are organized as to sections. This dissertation contins internet sources as figures which are both in black and white and in color.
